This is a sport for all age groups and there is a growing interest from teenagers and younger players across the World. So if you’re thinking Short Mat Bowls is just a sleepy social group of Crudwell locals, when you read about the amazing achievements you will think again!
‘Crudwell Short Mat Bowls Club currently has 30 members. We have a range of abilities within the club from a Welsh International, 8 players with county experience (currently 4 playing regularly), steady club players and a number who have been playing for a limited time. We are competitive but those who wish to play socially are very welcome. Having a convivial tea or coffee and a chat with fellow club members at club sessions is considered to be essential!
We play in the Wiltshire County League system, winning the CL (North) for 8 successive years in the winter season. We have won the County League (N) in the summer a number of times in the past few years and we have been County-wide champions in the Summer League, Winter League and the now-defunct Team of Three leagues. We also compete in the Malmesbury League – last season, our team won the league, and our other team came second; our team also won the League KO Cup and the second team were runners-up. Club members have done well in County competitions in recent years and gone on to represent Wiltshire in National Finals.
New bowlers or less experienced bowlers are always welcomed, and we have members willing to help or to offer guidance if it is required. We can normally loan woods to new bowlers so all you have to do is come along with a pair of flat shoes. We normally play on Tuesday evenings (7.30-10 pm) and Thursday afternoons (2.30 -5 pm). These days and times can be flexible so you should contact our club secretary (Geoff Lane – frontender@btinternet.com) to confirm arrangements.
